Help with Choosing the Best Folding Exercise Bikes for You
With folding exercise bikes, you get a similar workout to what you get with fixed or non-foldable bikes, which the added bonus that you can fold it away and store it easily.
Before purchasing a folding exercise bike, or any other type of exercise equipment for that matter, it is important to learn as much as you can about it. Far too often, exercise equipment is discarded or goes unused because it does not meet the requirements of the user. Here are some points you should bear in mind.
A Recumbent Folding Exercise Bike
There are basically two kinds of folding bike. The recumbent bike and the upright exercise bike. There are advantages to each one. A recumbent bike, for example, offers back support and is comfortable. However, it does not feel anything like using a road bike and it can be bulky in construction. An upright bike, on the other hand, is a lot more like using a real road bike, is good for intense workouts but does not offer the same support as a recumbent bike. Regardless of the differences, however, you can get a good workout on either.
It’s All About Resistance
The key to a good exercise bike is all about the resistance that the bike gives you. The resistance is what helps toughen your workout, essentially simulating cycling uphill. Folding exercise bikes tend to generate resistance either manually or though using magnets. In all honesty, either type will offer you a good workout, though a lot of modern exercise bikes tend to have magnetic resistance as it tends to offer the user more control over their workout, and is usually linked with the performance computer to help you plan a structured workout. However, if you are looking for a cheap exercise bike, don’t discount manual resistance machines.
Living With a Foldable Exercise Bike
A common concern that people have when thinking of purchasing a folding exercise bike is that they want to know whether it is stable and whether it will last. The usable lifetime of a foldable bike is a very important factor, as it would be with any type of fitness or exercise equipment. A good quality folding exercise bike should feel sturdy and stable so that you have confidence in it during your workout. Early folding bikes were often shaky and a little unstable, focusing more on the fact that it could be folded rather than on its quality as an exercise tool. Modern fold-able bikes, however, provide the best of both worlds.
We will cover build quality of the bikes we review to help you make an informed decision if you are thinking of purchasing the best foldable exercise bikes. As with anything though, we would recommend reading reviews from several different sources, and if you are in any doubt try and check out your bike in a sports goods store. You can always come back and take advantage of the cheaper internet prices later! So, on with the best folding exercise bikes reviews!
Top 10 Best Folding Exercise Bikes
Given its popularity, it’s fair to say that the Schwinn 140 Upright Exercise Bike is one of the most sought after entry level bikes available on the market. It is easy to see why, as it offers many attractive features. Its compact design and excellent build quality mean that you’ll enjoy working out on it and will keep coming back for more.
When it comes to the design and build quality of the Schwinn 140 upright exercise bike, you really could not ask for more. The resistance mechanism has been well designed, with the change between resistance levels being very smooth. There are sixteen resistance levels in total, which you can move between at the touch of a button. We love this attention to detail, as you tend to get with Schwinn exercise bikes and its ease of use.
What’s the Schwinn 140 Upright Exercise Bike like to live with?
If you’re committing to spending on an exercise bike, it is important to know what the bike will be like to live with. This can make the difference between working out regularly or ending up using the bike as a clothes horse. The good news here is that the Schwinn 140 upright exercise bike (I keep stressing upright, as there is also a recumbent model) is fairly quiet to use. I think this is an important point. Most people to not have the luxury of their own soundproofed gym, so will be using the bike in their home. If you want to work out whilst others are in the house, then the noise produced by exercise equipment is an important consideration. Have no fears with the Schwinn 140 bike, its quiet and smooth operation is easy to live with, largely due to the excellent build quality
The Schwinn 140 has an extremely sturdy frame due to being constructed from top quality materials. It is a great option when you compare it to the other upright exercise bikes that it is competing with. Despite only being pricey, it will give many more expensive bikes a run for their money in terms of quality and usability. The only real downside when it comes to the frame is its size. It is aimed at the average sized person, meaning that if you are well over 6 feet tall then you may find it uncomfortable. There are other models aimed specifically at taller people. This limitation is not specific to the Schwinn 140 bike, however, it is common across all exercise bikes. My advice is that, for the taller person, you should check out the bike in person before making a purchase. That way you can see if you find it to be comfortable before spending your hard earned money
The other drawback we noticed, as briefly mentioned earlier, is the onboard computer/console that comes with the Schwinn 140. The display quality isn’t the best we’ve seen on an exercise bike, and we found it can be hard to view from certain angles, though this is only a minor gripe.
Overall, if you are starting out on exercising using a bike, or you intend to be a casual user of the bike, then the Schwinn 140 Upright exercise bike is an excellent choice. You are probably not in the market for a higher end, expensive, model but you still require the build quality and features associated with a Schwinn exercise bike. As with many things, you tend to get what you pay for in terms of quality, and often the cheapest bikes you see are just not up to the task. The Schwinn 140 is a great choice in terms of getting good quality for a good price.
If you are a more experienced rider, then this may be a good choice for infrequent workouts, but you will probably need to look elsewhere for regular high-intensity workouts. The Schwinn 140 upright exercise bike is ideal for the newbie or intermediate riders looking for a quality bike, with good features at a budget-friendly price.

If you are in the market for a well built, durable and reliable exercise bike then it is well worth considering the Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike Pro. When it comes to upright exercise bikes it is one of the best-selling models available. With this unbiased review, we’ll cover the features, the positives, and the negatives. Well hopefully help answer any questions you have regarding the Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike Pro, and help you make an informed decision if you are considering making a purchase.
Who is the Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike aimed at?
The Schwinn Airdyne is a great all round exercise bike. It’s not so expensive that it is aimed squarely at professionals, but its features and all round build quality mark it out as a professional or fitness centre level bike. You certainly wouldn’t miss the gym bike if you had a Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike at home!
It is ideal for anyone that is looking to lose weight, tone up, or just to stay healthy by exercising regularly. It’s also great for those looking for a good cardio workout in order to boost their stamina
Where the Schwinn Airdyne really shines though is a tool for a high-intensity cardio workout. It’s not the sort of bike you sit on and watch TV. This is for those whose goal is a high intensity, high-calorie burn workout.
Of course, its main function is as an aerobic trainer, but it can also be used for anaerobic training, which significant benefits to core muscle groups such as the arms, shoulders, and chest. You can expect muscle gain and tone with regular use.
Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike Pro Features
- Durable upright exercise bike with flywheel air resistance system
- The air resistance adapts to the speed you cycle. Much like a rowing machine, the faster you cycle the better the workout
- Dual-action arm handles means you get an upper body workout along with the exercise benefits to your legs
- On board computer console tracks elapsed time, distance traveled, revolutions per minute, calories burned and more
- Measures approx 55 x 26 x 53 inches (W x H x D), and weighs around 113 pounds
- Is an all-purpose bike that is a good fit for many people’s needs
- We feel it offers excellent value for money
Why we like the Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike
What I really like about the Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike is that it uses an air resistance system, which works a lot like an air resistance indoor rower. The fan in the flywheel spins faster the harder you cycle. This means that as you cycle faster, the resistance increases. This guarantees a great workout, but also means that the bike is suitable for people of all fitness levels. The advantage an air resistance system has over other types of resistance found on exercise bikes, such as magnetic resistance, is that the resistance it offers is only limited to the effort and energy you put in. The harder you pedal, the higher the resistance level which helps make for a fantastic cardio workout with excellent fat loss and stamina benefits. Need a rest? Then just ease off the pace and the resistance will drop accordingly.
I keep mentioning the cycling benefits of the bike, but the fact that it also exercises the upper body shouldn’t be overlooked. The dual-action system (shown in the picture on the left), synchronises your movements, much like a cross trainer, so that you end up working out your upper and lower body at the same time.
The onboard computer/console that comes with the Schwinn airdyne exercise bike gives you the information you would expect on a bike of this quality. All the usual data is there including distance traveled, elapsed workout time, calories burned, RPM and heart rate shown on a bright, LED display. Whilst not essential to a good workout, the computer is useful as a progress tracking tool as you seek to improve your fitness and stamina levels.
It’s worth mentioning that we found the seat to be comfortable (as far as exercise bikes go!). The support from Schwinn is good, with excellent warranty options included.
What Kind of Workout Can I Expect to Get?
The Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike oozes quality. The installation is fairly pain-free, and once complete is ready for use straight away. The bike feels sturdy, the pedals feel strong and the handles are where you would expect them to be. It just feels comfortable, which helps give you confidence in building up to a high-intensity workout. Sometimes you find with cheaper bikes that, when you get up to a certain speed or intensity, the bike begins to wobble, which means you naturally begin to ease off. This isn’t the case with the Schwinn Airdyne.
There are a few ways in which you can use the bike. You can choose to treat it purely as a cycle, and pedal without using the handles at all, or you can pedal whilst using the handles for a more, whole body workout. Alternatively, if your legs can’t take any more cycling, or you are alternating your workouts, you can just use the handles by themselves for a great upper body workout. Personally, I prefer a rowing machine for that kind of workout, but the Schwinn Airdyne bike is a good option if you don’t have room for a cycle and a rower.
The use of an air resistance mechanism means there aren’t any set workout programs. The bike adjusts the resistance in accordance to how hard you are working out. This allows you to vary your workout without worrying about changing settings and is fantastic if you are looking to do interval training.
The addition of the upper body workout means you can get a much better workout in less time than you would with a traditional exercise bike. You won’t have to use an upper body cardio machine as the Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike combines both upper and lower body workouts. The upshot of this means that you can spend less time doing cardio!
As you can tell from the absence of negative comments, we like the Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike, and think it is a fantastic bit of exercise kit. We’d never recommend that you make a purchase based on one review.
Should you Buy a Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike?
We are often underwhelmed when we review exercise equipment, but the Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike really exceeded out expectations. It just does what it does very well. In a nutshell, it’s a great quality exercise bike that also represents great value for your money.

This is a great bike from Confidence Sports, which folds away for easy storage. As with all bikes, it’s a great way to get fit in the home, burning as much as four times more calories than walking. This model as an adjustable padded seat and adjustable, non-skid foot pedal straps. To monitor your progress it has a 4 function trip computer which provides you with information on Time, Speed, Distance and Calories Burned. At 124cm in height and weighing around 20kg, when packaged, it is a fairly compact bike which you should have little trouble in finding a place for.
We would say that the Confidence Stow A Bike Foldable Exercise X-Bike is a good introduction into the world of casual exercise on a folding exercise bike, especially on when you are looking for the convenience of being able to exercise at home. The size of the bike makes it very easy to store, so is great for those whose storage space is at a premium.
The build and set up of the bike is fairly straightforward, which is always good. When in use, the bike is almost silent at the lower resistance levels which can be an important consideration. The resistance is generated through magnets and is changed manually using a dial close to the handlebars. The compact nature of this bike means that it’ll fit happily in the corner of your room, almost un-noticed, until you are ready to workout!
Bearing in mind the price of this folding exercise bike, the Confidence Stow A performs really well, even with moderately heavy use. Don’t get me wrong, this is an entry level bike and isn’t necessarily suited to regular prolonged high-intensity workouts, but the build quality is great and should last the more casual user a long time. The computer monitor isn’t the best you will find, providing only four metrics, but again, for a beginner, this is what you would expect and is probably all you will need.
So, overall if you are looking to exercise and are looking to purchase your first bike, given the price this is a good choice. But if you get into cycling and use it regularly you may soon be wanting to upgrade.

The Ultrafit F-Bike is a popular folding exercise bike or trainer with eight resistance levels and an LCD display monitor which records your exercise session, presenting you with metrics on time, calories burned, speed, distance covered and heart/pulse rate. When folded it is a compact unit but still offers a maximum user weight of up to 100 kilograms, which demonstrates the build quality.
The UltraFit F-Bike can be stowed away easily to save space by folding into a smaller unit. The difference in size once folded will surprise you, making it great for those who don’t have a great ultrafit folding exercise bike deal of room for exercise equipment. It strikes me as a great, casual use, bike for those that live in a flat or apartment.
As you would expect, the bike can be adjusted to aid your comfort. For example, the saddle height can be adjusted easily.
An LCD display computer keeps you up to date with your progress. Given the price you’d be right to expect that this doest record all the metrics an experienced cyclist may require, but it is great for the beginner and even includes a pulse monitor, which is unusual for a bike in this price range.
Resistance is provided using magnets, which makes the bike virtually silent in use whilst still giving you a reasonably rigorous workout, especially at the higher of the eight built-in resistance levels.
This bike is so easy to move about and folding up is very handy we would recommend this bike to first time buyers, and new or casual cyclists, as a great way to start to exercising, though we would say that the more experienced cyclist may find it a little basic.
- Fast and easy to assemble.
- folding Bicycle Trainer with two-way bearings for eight resistance levels
- Has a modern battery operated LCD that displays functions like time, calories, speed, distance, and pulse rate.
- Adjustable saddle height; maximum user weight of 220 pounds
- Saddle height can be adjusted, can handle maximum weight of 220 pounds
- This bike will Strengthen both your cardiovascular system and muscles in no time.

For the person who is just getting back into exercise, but is a little intimidated by the super-fit crowd at the gym, there is an alternative to sitting on the couch watching television. The Marcy Upright Mag Bike is a compact stationary bike which can fit into small apartments easily.
With its smooth action from the whisper-quiet magnetic resistance, this bike will help you achieve your fitness goals. Because it is quiet, you can listen to your music or watch television without turning the volume up too far. Unlike at a gym, you can have control of the television, so you can enjoy your own programs while you pedal the pounds away.
- 8 level Magnetic resistance
- 300 lb. maximum capacity
- Powder coated steel frame
This spin bike has eight resistance levels, so you can increase the intensity of your workouts as you get into shape and get stronger. Alternatively, you could choose to start your workout with a light resistance, working up to higher levels, then back off to the light resistance again to cool down. With this bike, the choice is yours.
Of course, you will want to monitor your progress. For that reason, the bike features an LCD screen which shows workout time, calories burned, distance covered, and speed. As any dedicated athlete knows, watching those numbers climb can be very motivating as you ride.
The bike itself is simple, stable, and intuitive. Novice riders have no problem just getting on and riding. The seat is thickly padded and will conform to your body shape. Since the height of the seat is adjustable, the bike can be used by a wide range of people. The textured handlebars offer a good grip without slipping, blisters or soreness after your workout. You can use your normal shoes, as the pedals are wide and have adjustable straps to hold your feet in place. Some assembly is required before the bike will be ready to use, but the process is not difficult. The instruction booklet will help here, as will the tools that are provided. Most people need from 30 minutes to an hour to assemble this exercise bike. All in all, this is a good, solid exercise bike for someone who is a novice or unsure if they want to pursue fitness with a spin bike. Since the Marcy Upright Mag Bike is intuitive, solid and inexpensive it makes a good introduction to fitness.

The Sole Fitness SB700 Exercise Bike has obviously been designed and built for user comfort. It features adjustable handlebars and seat to create the perfect fit for your individual requirements. It has a 48-pound flywheel which is chrome plated and heavy duty for maximum durability, while the Kevlar brake system allows for a smooth and quiet ride with enough variety of resistance to create a challenge for any rider.
The pedals have sturdy toe straps for optimum safety and security, there are also water bottle holders for additional convenience. Resistance can be adjusted with an adjustable knob for optimum convenience and maximum workout fitness. It is suitable for a body weight of up to 300 pounds.
The design also incorporates an integral LCD console which is backlit in blue and displays the time, RPM, speed, distance and calories burnt. The console has the compatibility to work with wireless chest straps to measure heart rate and allow monitoring of optimum heart rate during training. The SB700 is supplied with an extensive warranty which covers the electronics and parts for a period of three years, a years labor and lifetime coverage for the frame. The primary advantage of the SB700 is the user comfort. The design of this model has been carefully considered to provide a great exercise experience whether you are an outdoor cyclist or are used to intense spinning classes. However, the comfort of the user has not been compromised. The design of the SB700 allows for a comfortable exercise experience in your own home. Unlike many models of exercise bike, the SB700 allows for the seat and handlebars to be adjusted back and forward, up and down. This allows the user to tailor their seating position perfectly for their specific height and body type. While those with longer or shorter legs may have struggled in the past, the SB700 is perfectly suited to provide a great workout for all.
The SB700 also feels remarkably sturdy and durable. It is obvious that this model has been designed to cope with frequent use over years. The use of Kevlar in the resistance pads will ensure that the model can withstand a great deal of wear before any replacement part will be needed. The flywheel is 48 pounds rather than the 40-pound model which is commonly used in exercise bikes to create a more substantial piece of fitness equipment which can provide a great workout. The frame feels substantial and solid, which can provide additional confidence even if you are a little heavier. This model has been tested to safely accommodate those up to a body weight of 300 pounds. The main disadvantage to the SB700 is the weight of the bike. The total weight is approximately 140 pounds, which can make moving it or take it up or down stairs a challenge. However, this substantial weight is due to the solid construction.
The SB700 from Sole Fitness does provide an exercise bike which reassuringly solid. The ride is smooth and the braking system feels effective and safe. Additionally, the adaptability ensures that riders of all heights and body dimensions will enjoy a comfortable and effective workout.

Recumbent vs Upright Exercise Bike
Everyone is trying to know which one is more effective; the recumbent vs. upright exercise bike? Both of these designs are made for cycling but one claims to be much more popular than the other. But of course, before anything else, we must know what the difference is between the two of them. Let’s start with the recumbent exercise bike.
With the word recumbent which literally means “lying down? recumbent bikes have seats that support the back of the person using it. You will look like seating on a sofa while pedaling at the same time. They lean back in a relaxed position as with the arms hanging at the side of the body. The legs are stretched horizontally towards the pedals of the bike on the other hand, which indicates that not much stress is coming from the back or legs because they are much more comfortable. Less fatigue and muscle strains, therefore, are some of the benefits you can get by exercising using the recumbent bike.
Meanwhile, the upright exercise bike is very much like the regular bike whereas in the seats are much higher and do not have any back support. The body leans forward and the rider must put his hands on handle bars to keep balance and stability. You must move your feet below your hips as you pedal, making it more difficult and causes pain not just on at the back but also at the arms and hands of the user.
As much as people were already used to the upright bike, more and more are now purchasing the recumbent exercise bike mainly because of the comfort that is given especially the support that it gives to the lower back of your body. Not all is pleased by the recumbent bike, however, as some cyclist that are eager for challenges still use the upright bike because it also allows the arms to be included in the exercise.
In summary, the best comparison made to recumbent vs. upright exercise bike is the position it gives to the users. The recumbent bike has a more laid back position and does not need much effort to pedal that is why it is much more popular than that of the upright exercise bike which makes you’re your back, lean forward and bend your neck a while pedaling. With this, you should be able to distinguish for yourself which is more important and beneficial for you and your health regime; the comfort you would feel with recumbent bikes, or the challenge and strenuous workout you can get with upright bikes.
For a bike to be rated as the top in best folding exercise bikes category it should deliver the functional and adjustability that one might need. When that all is followed you will be able to get a quality workout to burn calories and extremely improve your fitness. If you want to burn more calories, you might consider using these exercise bikes so that you can also track your heart rate.
